Why do you run?

Sometimes I get asked why I run...... and I try to put into words the thoughts that flood into my brain when I think about running. It's complicated. I run for lots of reason.

When I first started running, I did it because I needed something I could set a goal and strive after. I was in a position that didn't feel like I had a lot of opportunities for movement and growth. I needed an outlet that allowed me to push and accomplish. I ran a 5k then thought wow.... maybe I can do a 10k..... 1/2..... full. (this has gone on until 100m). It just kept building because I loved the feeling of going farther than I previously could. Growth.

You may not know this about me because I try to stay positive and happy most of the time. #Jenirunshappy (which I will say is still true, I'm happiest on the trail) but I am a worrier. I have an anxious brain most of the time and for some reason running settles that. This is probably why I am drawn to the longer distances because that means for hours on end all I have to worry about is moving forward. One foot in front of the other..... fuel in.... breathe. My mind doesn't focus on the worries of the job, the week, relationships, whether I'm liked or upsetting anyone. I simply run. Even as I write this.... I'm worrying about how it will be perceived.

The one you probably know the most is the privilege of running for Lucy. #Irun4Lucy. She's awesome and her family inspires everyday. Every mile I log and race I complete, I do for her. If she could..... she'd be running all over the place. She's fun, feisty, and perfect! If I can give her medals to make her smile or send silly pics from the trail, bring it on.

I also run because it helps me connect. Social settings can be a struggle for a worrier, but running helps me build connections. I love the conversations I've had with family, friends, and even strangers while running/racing. It's amazing hearing the stories of others. What brings them to put on the running shoes (or sandals) and hit the road or trail. I think I love this most of all...... connection.

So yea.... why do I run?! I run because it helps me be a better person. How about you?
